Hi. I would like to change the password for a user account of a local client machine running on Vista that was part of a domain on a Windows server 2003 environment that is no more. Is it possible to do this without having to do it from the server side (active directory on Windows 2003 server), when I try to do this it states that it was unable to negotiate password change with server. From the local machine I then deactivated the allegiance of this user to the old domain but it then completely removed all the settings pertaining to this user and the account was no more visible and accessible at all, basically it was deleted from the system . Fortunately the data itself in the users folder was still there so I made a copy of it and used system restore to reestablish this account, with great difficulty. The reason this account is important is that there are tons of settings in outlook and with other software. The option of making a new user and starting everything from scratch is too cumbersome. Everything is working fine offline, I can log in to the account without being connected to the server but I just cannot change the password without being connected to the network. Creating a new Windows Server 2003 environment with the same domain name and connecting that particular machine and user and changing the password, would that work ? Is that the only option. Is there a risk of mismatch between this new server and the old one during login authentication, such as invalid certificates etc.. this user account being detected as invalid ?
Thank you.

Trying to "net out" what you want, you want to remove the computer from the domain, but keep the desktop and settings from your old account, right? You can try this, I do not use outlook so I cannot speak to that.
Create a new local user account with admin authority. Create your new user account that you want to use on an everyday basis, and logon to that account at least once (you must log on to actually create all the user folders). Log onto the new admin account, change the folder options to view hidden and system files, then copy all the files from the user directory of your old domain account to the new non-domain account (you cannot be logged onto either the source or destination accounts in order to copy all the files/folders)
