The answer would likely depend on the search engine in question and the industry you're in.

As a general rule, banner ads work better for branding purposes. Users have become "banner blind" to a large degree and don't do a lot of clicking.

On the other hand, targeted PPC ads are sometimes as relevant as the natural search results. There's a reason MSN and Yahoo have both launched or re-launched their PPC systems in the last 18 months in order to compete with Google. PPC ads can be very effective advertising.

Ultimately, you should probably do some testing to determine which is best specifically for your situation.

It would depend on whether you wanted exposure (banners) or traffic (PPC). Both have their upsides and downsides, but the effectiveness of each depends on many variables - almost too many to list, but here's a go at it - for banners, effectiveness depends on how creative the offer and advertisement is, how motivated the audience that will see the ad (is this a targeted audience ready to buy?) and how much you'll be paying for individual impressions. For PPC, effectiveness depends on the integrity of the audience viewing your ad, the relevance of the ad copy and the landing page just to name a few important factors. Effectiveness depends on the return on spend that you receive from advertising.

Hi,

First of all, PPC campaigns do work but only if you still got money for it. Yes, they could really boost your web traffic at no time, however, when the "pay" expires, your traffic will slow down too. I suggest that you have to look for long-term marketing/advertising campaigns. Essentially, when it comes to web marketing, you really have to work on things slow. Do not expect desired traffic at once because you could crash and burn. Moderate increase of traffic is normal and healthy, thus is highly recommended. So if you are new to all these stuff, hire someone or a specialist to help you with marketing and promotions. It is good that you know this stuff too, right? Just beware of scammers out there. Choose someone who is credible.

Good luck!
