People in rock and pop?
Yes! Many are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law. One Lady is having to pay Millions in restitution for her stealing of music

i dont really do this these days, but:
A: i'd be more worried about viruses. you do that long enough, you will get viruses
B: the odds of being prosecuted by the RIAA were not that high. it is mainly scare tactics
C: the RIAA recently officially stopped their policy of suing their own customers
i mainly go to the library for my free music. its legal (well i guess it isnt, but it is unenforcable. actually i dont even really know if it is legal or not, it may not be as long as i have no intention to sell or distribute) and i have to pay for it anyway, so i might as well use it. i like albums better than songs anyway. my libraries have great selections also.

I download all the time, but I do not upload and I do not use any file sharing utilities - I'm much craftier than that. ~_^ However, if I like the band I buy their stuff. That way they can afford to keep making music. I have tons of CDs that have never even been unwrapped because I already have the entire thing archived on one of my drives and imported onto a MP3 player (I have several, broken down by genre and one "slush" player that's a mix). If I don't like them I nuke 'em off my drive and they never make it to one of my MP3 players. I always support the artists I like while the ones I do not are treated with the utmost disdain and wiped from my consciousness as much as possible - like a bad ex-boyfriend.
Edit: Prof Anger, I'm a chef. I've always got people wanting me to go to their sister's cousin's best friend's party. I never go because I know *why* they want me to go. Well, that and I don't like people in general, so why would I suddenly go to a total stranger's party? This is part of the reason I always support the artists I like. I belong to a creative field myself. If someone is upset or doesn't like the meal - no charge and we just don't take a reservation for them again. If they do - they'll come back and spend more money. I also always send out an amuse bouche so they can sample some of my fare before they even order...
Edit 2: I download to see if I want to even buy the CD. If I like them, I buy the CD. If I don't, I delete the download.
