Question to do with IRC?

Postby edwin » Wed Nov 25, 2009 11:15 am

So there are various chat sites that use IRC directly through the browser. I was wondering if there was a way to find out what the actual IRC server is so I can connect through a client like Mirc instead of the browser? I tried irc.(sitename).com and I also checked the source code, but to no avail. All of the commands work in the browser so if there is a command that I could use so that it would tell me what the server is that would be very helpful, thanks.

Some of them do not allow mIRC to connect, some of them do. You should have been able to tell by doing a 'view source' on the web page. Perhaps you just weren't looking in the right place. (If you add a web page URL into your question or email me with it, I'll tell you what server it uses if I can tell.)

You can try typing '/INFO' into the chat client. If it's a standard client and server, the server will tell you.

It depends on how the browser is performing the connection to the server. But if it is connecting to the IRC server using client side code, then you can usually tell by installing and using wireshark (www.wireshark.org).
